About Calabria

Calabria- a state in Italy is lying in the southern tip of the country. It is called toe of the Italian boot due to its geographical position. It is a peninsula whose three sides are covered with huge water bodies- Ionic Sea and Tyrrhenian Sea while on the fourth side stands Monte Pollino massif. The main fact about Calabria is its 716 km long coastline which has few splendid beaches making it a preferred holiday spot these days.

History of Calabria

History of Calabria can be traced back to Mesolithic and Copper Ages. The remains of these two ages have been found in mainland Calabria. Apart from that, ruins of Greek civilization, Roman and Byzantine Empire and Albanian influence have also been found here which testify that Calabria has a history to boast of.

Geography of Calabria

Though it has been mentioned about Calabria that it is peninsula with three sides surrounded by ocean, yet it is mainly a mountainous region. About 49% of the total land mass is covered with mountains, 42% occupied by hills and remaining 9% is plain land. This peculiar landscape made navigation a difficult task and as a result it remained away from the limelight of tourism. But now, the secret is out and tourists from all over the world are hovering to this peninsula.
