Calabrian history is the amalgamation of many empires. As the confluence of the influence of these empires, Calabrian traditional customs are very rich and varied. This variety can be seen everywhere in Calabria, in its cuisines, festivities or attires.
Religions
The numerous churches and piazzas testify the fact that religion is very strong in this part of Italy. But along with Christianity, paganism is also very popular. The concurrent usage of Christian and pagan motifs in the artifact proves that both the religions have been peacefully co-existed in Calabria.
Festivities
The two mostly celebrated festivals of Calabria are Easter and Christmas. Calabrian traditional customs have been transferred from one generation to another as legacy. As a result, the impact of each of the phase that this place underwent is reflected in these celebrations. Helena, Byzantine, French, Greek, Spanish and Albanian influence is quite evident in even everyday life of the local people.
Carnivals
Carnivals have become intrinsic part of Calabrian lifestyle and celebration. It is a welcome relief from the mundane life of earning money and sustaining life. There are no mentions of carnivals in the ancient religious scriptures so people relate it to their day to day lives. Mardi Gras is one of the most important day of carnival in Calabria.
