Economy of Calabria

There is not much to say about the economy of Calabria as for many years the region is neglected by the successive governments of Italy. Even the past history left lot of wounds in the minds of the Calabrian people who migrated to other locations across the world in search of greener pastures. The future of economy in the region is bright with the recent developments.

The growth of real estate industry across the world and in Italy also did not change much of the economy. Only when the real estate market reached the saturation point in the other prosperous regions in Italy, the investors in their quest for cheaper prices and alternate property for development looked at Calabria.

Change from the past

This resulted in the sea change in the economy of Calabria overnight with the entire world taken aback by the beauty and the potential it offered for development. Even the Italian government started developing Calabria with an eye on foreign investments. Even the entry of Italy into the common markets of Europe opened the doors for the growth of economy and thus overall development of the region. Most of the growth is witnessed in tourism with other traditional markets like crafts, agriculture and fish left behind.

The History of Calabria is very long and varied. This is because this region was inhabiatated by many including the ancient Greeks lived who created many landmarks in the fields of philosophy, science, maths and religion along with politics.

Byzantines have given way to Longobards in 7th Century who united Cosenza with Benevento and Salerno. After 10th century, Byzantines took it back and later Normans arrived after a century.

There were many religious traditions which were westernized and many holy concepts also developed during these period. Feudalism, Spanish occupation, social collapse, famine, disease and natural disasters were some of the disturbances caused in the history of Calabria.

However, the glory of the past has never diminished and very well established and restored as rich culture and customs. People who live in Calabria, are fundamentally respect the history of Calabria and in fact the history is the only rich possession of people that they treasure and value to a great extent.

In fact this also reflects on the interests of tourists who visit Calabria for knowing more about the history of Italy. Calabria is rich in culture and customs and this true for the present and for the future. This is also one of the good reason to boost the tourism industry.
